SKAGIT VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER

Project Description

Location: Mount Vernon, Washington
Project Size: 33,000 sf
Architect: Fisher
Facility Type: Medical and Diagnostic Services

Built for the Present with a Plan for the Future

Without Interrupting Service Delivery in the Adjacent Building

The Skagit Valley Medical Center (now Skagit Regional Clinics) is a multi-specialty practice with a medical staff of more than 100 physicians and health care professionals. When it became clear that the Mount Vernon facility had outgrown its current building, the medical center team chose Fisher. Tasked to design and build the practice’s most recent addition–the Maynard L. Johnson Building.

Fisher’s design | build team worked with the client to develop a master plan. It would need to accommodate the growth expected over the next ten years. The new facility required housing a larger medical staff and the emerging diagnostic services.

While not unusual, it is a particular challenge to construct a project of this size. Moreover, without disrupting the flow or impairing the safety of patients entering the adjoining facility.

The 3-story structural steel building sits on a concrete and steel foundation with 79 auger cast piles driven 80-90 ft. below the building. Adding to the construction challenge, there was a two month permitting delay. Pushing the majority of the work would be done in the rainy winter months. Crews working on the medical center addition had no room for glitches in their process. The tight schedule began with steel delivery in mid-September and met the scheduled occupancy date 25 weeks later.

The design | build project has 52 patient exam rooms, a lab, and state-of-the-art x-ray and mammography suites. Planning for the future of ever-changing medical technology, The roof design features two hatch doors for “dropping-in” future equipment.
