Project Description

Client: RailEx USA
Location: Delano, California
Surface Area: 225,000 sq. ft.

Working to complete a network of refrigerated distribution centers, Railex’s third facility is in California’s Central Valley. The unique cross-country system ships perishable agricultural products from growers to markets along the eastern seaboard in 5 days.

A Cool Cross-Docking Solution

Built Tough Enough to Handle the Constant Demands of Product Transfer

The Delano, CA facility functions as cross-docking warehouse, storing products for 48 hours or less. During the 5-day shipping sequence the facility accommodates roughly 200 semi-trucks, delivering refrigerated and frozen products to be transferred to rail cars for shipping.

Working with the owner, the team at Fisher created a facility designed to maintain optimum storage temperature throughout delivery, storage and transfer. The facility’s freezer and 24 cool rooms store a range of agricultural products, each in optimum conditions.

The building, constructed on cast-in-place concrete foundations, is built of structural steel with insulated metal panel walls. It has an insulated membrane roof over bar joists and a metal deck. The 40 truck and 19 rail docks are designed to seal during transfer, ensuring against temperature fluctuation, minimizing loss of energy.

Working with Fisher, Railex found the design | build solution required for their innovative business model. Each facility is designed and built to meet the demands of constant and varying product transfer, delivering on investment by minimizing energy consumption and maximizing space efficiency.
